BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A shot by George Alboim that appeared to deflect off the head of Jesse Dupuis and in late in the first period, held up as a the game-winner, as the Blind River Beavers edged the Greater Sudbury Cubs 2-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at the Blind River Community Centre.
The contest was scoreless until late in the first frame when things opened up offensively.
Caleb Minns gave Blind River the lead at 17:20, with his team-leading seventh, as he went bar down from the right of Cubs’ starter Joel Rainville.
Countering quickly, Greater Sudbury drew level just over a minute later when Jaxon Bedard buried one from the right hash marks.
However, the Beavers matched that by striking with 28 seconds left in the frame compliments of Alboim’s right point attempt looked to clip off the helmet of Dupuis, changed direction, and bounced into the net.
After a scoreless middle session, the two teams entered the third with Blind River still holding their slim one-goal lead.
In the final frame, both goalkeepers held firm once again as the home side held on to move past the Cubs into sole possession of second place in the league’s West Division standings.
Jeremi Delaquis made 26 saves to record the win for the Beavers while the Cubs’ Rainville faced 37 chances in the narrow setback.
