Amaya the OT Hero as Gold Miners clip Rock

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Ashton Amaya’s second goal of the game and third point overall 25 seconds into overtime was the decider as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners defeated the Timmins Rock 6-5 Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Timmins took a 2-1 lead after one period of play sandwiching power play markers by Jacob Shakar and Grant McClellan around an even strength effort from Kirkland Lake’s Kevin Ford.

The Gold Miners carried the second stanza offensively as they outscored the Rock 3-0.

Amaya and Tyler Fyfe notched man advantage efforts while William Mizuik’s 15th of the season made it 4-2 Gold Miners after 40 minutes.

Timmins countered with a trio of tallies of their own in the third to pull even and then go in front.

Alexandre Brisson brought the visitors to within one before Cole Gilligan struck twice in an eight and a half minute span to tie it then put the Rock up by one with 4:38 remaining in regulation.

The back and forth affair saw Fyfe force extra time at 17:19 as his picked up his second of the evening and 14th overall.

Then early in OT it was Amaya who won it for the home side as the Kirkland Lake captain collected his third game-winning goal of the campaign to give his team the extra point in the contest.

Alex Storjohann supplied three assists for the Gold Miners in the triumph, including one on the winner.

Brisson had a pair of helpers for Timmins.

Shot on goal were 34-32 in favour of Kirkland Lake with Allan Menary picking up the win and Al Rogers the OT setback.
