Caruso continues to produce as T-Birds top Rock

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Matthew Caruso continued his offensive prowess for the Soo Thunderbirds Saturday by scoring twice and helping set-up two others in a 5-2 victory over the Timmins Rock in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Essar Centre.

One of the hottest players in all of the NOJHL, Caruso had his second consecutive four-point outing and ran a goal streak to five and also has got on the scoresheet in six straight games on the night.

Timmins did open the scoring in the contest as Zachary Kercz collected his 18th of the season 8:05 in.

Sault Ste. Marie countered by picking up a pair of markers before the initial frame was complete on tallies by Brett Jeffries and Nathan Hebert.

Down a man, the Rock tied it at 2-2 with a Ryan Kerr shorthanded effort with 4:24 left in the middle session.

However, the T-Birds came back on the power play and went back in front thanks to Mark Tassone.

A key goal in the contest came in the final moments of the second as Caruso notched a man down marker for his side to put the Soo up 4-2 through two.

Caruso then finished off his impressive night with 11:13 remaining in the third to round out the night’s scoring.

Michael Caruso and Jaren Bellini had two assists apiece for the Thunderbirds.

Shots on goal favoured the T-Birds by a 45-17 count with Mario Culina picking up the win and Logan Ferrington the loss.
