GALLERY: Kirkland Lake strikes twice in late going to defeat Powassan

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners erased a one-goal, third period deficit by tallying twice in the back half of the session to pull out a 3-2 win over the Powassan Voodoos in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Thursday evening at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Action in the opening 20 minutes was scoreless with Kirkland Lake starter Dawson Rodin handling all 12 shots he saw fired his way by the Voodoos while Christian Cicigoi in the Powassan net stopped each of the eight attempts he faced in the stanza.

The Gold Miners would eventually break the deadlock 6:47 into the second period with Joshua Maine and Quinn Schneidmiller combining to set-up Noah Cauchi for his eighth.

A late two-man advantage opportunity helped the Voodoos draw level before the session was complete thanks to Gabienen Kioki`s power play marker at 17:13, which knotted the affair at 1-1 after two.

After Cameron Moore`s second assist of the night helped Joe Whittet put Powassan in front at 5:17 of the third, Kirkland Lake`s Colin Comrie levelled the proceedings with 7:24 left in regulation.

The Gold Miners then picked up the game-winner a couple of shifts later as Matthew Brassard buried an Aiden Wagner feed to secure the victory.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Voodoos by a 37-28 count with Rodin picking up the win and Cicigoi the loss.

With the result, Kirkland Lake won for an NOJHL-best 20th time as the home team in 2018-19 while improving to 28-11-2-1 overall.

As for Powassan, the setback saw their record slip to 22-17-1-1.
