NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that a trio of first-year players in Soo Thunderbirds forward Boris Katchouk, Sudbury Nickel Barons goaltender Kevin Labelle and Powassan Voodoos forward Steve Harland have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Feb. 8.
BORIS KATCHOUK, (F) – SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The Thunderbirds’ 16-year-old rookie forward was instrumental in helping Sault Ste. Marie skate to a trio of road victories over the weekend as he registered eight points in total.
Katchouk began by tallying twice, including scoring the game-winner, as the T-Birds topped defending NOJHL champion Kirkland Lake 4-0 Friday.
One night later he set-up the game-winner and added another assist as the Soo won 5-2 in Cochrane.
Katchouk then capped off his week with a two-goal, four-point performance in Iroquois Falls as the Thunderbirds flew past Abitibi 8-3.
In 23 games since joining the club, Katchouk is averaging well over a point-per-game with 30, on a dozen markers and 18 helpers.
KEVIN LABELLE, (G) – SUDBURY NICKEL BARONS – Labelle, a first-year netminder from Garson, came up big between the pipes for the Nickel Barons as he helped lead Sudbury to three consecutive victories.
The 18-year-old rookie stopper started off with a solid 31-save performance Wednesday helping end an eight-game unbeaten run by the Elliot Lake Wildcats as Sudbury won 7-2.
Two nights later Labelle came off the bench and stopped all 11 attempts he faced in relief as the Nickel Barons rallied for an 8-7 overtime triumph at Powassan.
Getting the start Saturday Labelle capped off his week by turning aside 33 of the 34 shots he faced as Sudbury defeated Blind River 5-1.
In all he finished his week with a stingy 1.31 goals-against average and a solid .962 save percentage.
Labelle’s 15 wins so far this season are the third most of any goalkeeper in the league.
STEVE HARLAND, (F) POWASSAN VOODOOS – The Voodoos’ rookie sensation continues to impress for first-year Powassan as he racked up another 10 points helping his club go 2-0-1.
The 18-year-old from Scarborough, Ont., started his week by setting up the game-winner Wednesday in a 4-1 victory over Mattawa.
Friday night Harland played a role in all seven goals the Voodoos scored, by tallying twice and supplying five assists in the 8-7 OT setback against Sudbury.
He then capped off his week by adding the game-winner, as part of a two-goal night, as Powassan rallied to double up Mattawa 4-2.
Now sitting second overall in NOJHL offensive production (37g-40a-77pts), Harland is presently riding an impressive 26-game point streak, having scored 29 times while adding 33 assists, totalling 62 points, in that span.
