TIMMINS, Ont. – Stewart Parnell potted a pair of first period goals, which featured the game-winner, as the Timmins Rock went on to skate past the Powassan Voodoos 4-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division encounter Friday with 1,068 spectators on hand at McIntyre Arena to view it.
Timmins gained the upper hand in the opening frame with the two tallies from courtesy of Parnell, which were both assisted by Karter Renouf.
Parnell also ran a modest point streak to three straight outings in the process.
On the power play in the middle session, the Rock extended their lead at 4:52 when Tyler Schwindt’s sixth of the season put the hosts up by three with help from Owen Shier and Phil Caron.
Moving on to the final stanza, Powassan dashed Tyler Masternak’s shutout bid eight and a half minutes into the stanza as Joe Whittet notched his 12th after being set-up by newcomer Jack Craycroft, who was making his NOJHL debut for the Voodoos, and Seiji Martone.
Then with Voodoos netminder Luke Greenwood on the bench late for an extra attacker, Riley Robitaille sealed the home ice triumph with an empty netter put in at 19:50 to round out the scoring.
Shots on goal on the night finished up at 35 apiece with Masternak recording the win while Greenwood suffered the setback.
With the result, Timmins improved to 22-5-1-1 overall while league-leading Powassan slipping to 25-5-0-0 overall.
