POWASSAN, Ont. – Seiji Martone went top shelf from close range to decide it as the Powassan Voodoos skated to a hard-fought 4-3 shootout triumph over the French River Rapids to win their 20th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game in a row Wednesday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Continuing their impressive play, Powassan opened the scoring five minutes into the contest as Gregory Trudeau-Paquet collected his 13th tally of the campaign while also running a consecutive game point streak to seven outings in succession.
Countering before the first period was complete, French River drew level thanks to Delano Brown at 11:59 as the clubs hit the intermission tied.
Brown then bagged his second of the night, in the first minute of the middle stanza, to put the Rapids in front.
Coming back, the home side knotted the affair at 3:04 when Joe Whittet connected for a 10th time this season.
Picking up their initial power play of the night, the Voodoos went back on top eight minutes later with Trudeau-Paquet notching another.
Going on a man advantage opportunity of their own, French River came back to level the proceedings before the period came to a close as Ty Chambers found the back of the net on Powassan starter Owen Say.
It stayed 3-3 through the third and the five-minute overtime sending it to extra shots to determine a winner.
There, Say stymied both French River attempts he faced while Eric Mondoux and Martone converted on their attempts for the Voodoos to give them the win and keep their lengthy streak alive.
Of note, during their 20-game victory run, Powassan has outscored their opponents 102-37.
The Voodoos’ Say finished with 24 saves to earn the triumph while the Rapids’ goalkeeper Chase Johnson turned in a solid 41-stop performance to help the visitors earn one point in the setback.
