Sudbury reaches 25-win plateau with 6-2 triumph over Elliot Lake

SUDBURY – A four-goal second period helped propel the Sudbury Nickel Barons to a 6-2 victory over the Elliot Lake Bobcats Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at McClelland Arena.

An early power play opportunity allowed the Nickel Barons to get on the board first as Martin Jolicoeur beat Bobcats starter Thomas Graham 2:11 into the contest.

The visitors responded to knot the affair after 20 minutes with Brad Hollman finding the mark with two and half minutes to go in the opening stanza.

Sudbury then exploded in the middle session getting tallies from Giovanni Foschia, Sebastien Leroux, Darcy Haines and Brett Dusick to blow it open.

After Jacob Punkari made it 6-1 eight minutes into the third, Elliot Lake’s Dustin Cordeiro wrapped up the proceedings in the late going with his ninth of the campaign.

Alex Laino turned aside 27 of 29 attempts fired on net to win for the ninth time in his past 10 starts helping Sudbury reach the 25-win plateau against 13 defeats.

Graham faced 48 shots in a losing cause as the Bobcats fell to 10-26-0-2 in their first season in the league.

NOJHL play continues Friday on three fronts with a trio of 7:30 p.m. starts.

North Bay will take on Blind River in a neutral site affair in Espanola, Elliot Lake returns home to host Abitibi while Sudbury heads to Kirkland Lake to meet the Gold Miners.
