SAULT STE. Marie, Ont. – A fifth consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory was collected by the Soo Thunderbirds Wednesday night as they blanked the Elliot Lake Wildcats 7-0 Wednesday night at John Rhodes Community Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie got going offensively in the first period with a power play marker from Jacob Kovacs and an even strength effort courtesy of Tyler Savard.

The Thunderbirds’ duo also scored in the middle session to put the hosts up by four while affiliate Ty Zachary bagged his first NOJHL goal at 13:35, during a man advantage, to extend the cushion.

It was more Soo in the third as Avery Rebek connected early while Cooper Smyl notched his 12th of the season midway through to wrap up the night’s scoring.

Rylan Clemons and Tristan Chichello dished out three assists each to aid the Thunderbirds offensive cause.

Soo starter Dakota Meyer handled all 31 shots he faced to record his first NOJHL shutout while picking up a win on back-to-back evenings.

Elliot Lake netminder Jonathan Lemaire meanwhile saw 52 attempts fired his way in defeat.
