POWASSAN, Ont. – A game for the ages saw Tomas Yachmenev score five times and dish out three assists to lead the Powassan Voodoos to a one-sided 10-0 triumph over the French River Rapids Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The victory was Powassan’s fifth straight and 35th overall on the campaign as they reached the 70-point plateau on the season.
Yachmenev began his big night by tallying twice in a five-goal barrage the Voodoos posted in the first period while Parker Bowman, Eric Allair and Eric Mondoux supplied singles.
He then hit his hat trick 6:42 into the middle stanza with a second shorthanded effort.
The hosts added another in the session of the stick of Seiji Martone with help from Bowman and Yachmenev.
It was more from the 19-year-old forward as he tacked two more in the third to reach the 24-goal on the season and hit 150 points in his NOJHL career.
Mathew Hardwick finished off the romp half way through the final frame.
Yachmenev’s efforts surpassed the league mark of single-game highs of goals and points this season, which were four and seven.
His five goals in a contest was the most in the NOJHL since Riley Nadeau also had five for the Blind River Beavers back on November 18, 2018.
Martone chipped in with six assists to go with his marker for a seven-point night.
Not lost in this was Voodoos’ goalkeeper Owen Say stopped all 38 shots he faced to post his second consecutive shutout and has not allowed a goal against in his past 136 minutes and 20 seconds of game action.
Ben Montgomery and Sebastian Woods both saw time in net in defeat for French River.
