Wildcats roll over Express

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats erupted for four unanswered goals in the third period as they skated to a 7-1 win over the Espanola Express Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at Centennial Arena.

Espanola got off to a good start in this one thanks to Barry Pitawanakwat’s first NOJHL goal 7:43 into the match-up.

The Wildcats countered with the equalizer midway through the frame on a Shane Woolsey effort while Spencer MacLean’s team-leading sixth of the season put the home side in front for good entering the middle stanza.

In the second, Elliot Lake extended their cushion with the lone marker of the session, which came off the stick of Liam Blais at 15:24.

The Wildcats got some insurance in the final frame getting a goal from defenceman Nathan Campbell who picked up his first of the season at 9:12 as his power play blast beat Express netminder Mitchell Jones.

He then drew assists on later tallies by Connor Rider and Ty Hannaford to put the game out of reach.

Wildcats captain Jason Wilson rounded out the night’s scoring in the final minute to extend a consecutive game point streak to six.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Elliot Lake by a 44-19 margin with Aaron Mackay picking up the win and Jones the loss.

With the result, the Wildcats raised their record to 5-1-2-0 while Espanola dropped to 1-8-0-0.
