Babin scores twice to lead Gold Miners past Bobcats

ELLIOT LAKE – Steven Babin scored twice to help propel the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 5-2 victory over the Elliot Lake Bobcats in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Thursday evening at Centennial Arena.

The visitors jumped out to a quick two-goal lead on markers by Austin Rust and Babin before the game was five minutes old.

Max Glashauser got Elliot Lake on the board midway through the opening stanza only to see Ethan Strong notch the eventual game-winner with just 24 seconds remaining in the first period.

The middle session then saw Ryan Fletcher pull the Bobcats to within a goal at 3:31, but Kirkland Lake responded with tallies from Babin and affiliate Dany Fortin to round out the night’s scoring in that second frame as neither side found the back of the net in the third.

Marc Audet started for the Gold Miners and was credited with the win stopping 10 of 12 attempts he faced before giving way to Kenny Fitzgerald with 7:56 to go in the middle stanza. Fitzgerald stopped all 15 attempts he saw in relief helping the Miners improve to 11-1 overall.

Etienne Roy was peppered with 40 pucks in a losing cause in the Elliot Lake net as they fell to 5-5-0-2 on the season.
