Champagne sparkles as North Bay rolls over Abitibi

NORTH BAY – Eric Champagne scored twice, including the game-winner, and also set-up two others as the North Bay Trappers blasted the Abitibi Eskimos 9-3 Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at West Ferris Arena.

Chance Thomas also had a big night for North Bay picking up a goal and dishing out three assists while newcomer Blake Peavey notched a pair of tallies in his Trappers debut.

The visiting Eskimos opened the night’s scoring early in the contest as Andrew Green connected on the power play at the 1:44 mark.

North Bay answered back courtesy Peavey and Zachary Shankar to go up one before Brady Clouthier knotted the affair with Abitibi’s second man advantage effort of the opening stanza.

After Peavey and Clouthier exchanged goals 13 seconds apart in the middle session, the Trappers took over before the period was complete getting tallies from Champagne, Anthony Postiglione and Ryan Demyen to go up 6-3 after 40 minutes.

The home side then put the game away in the third adding three more off the sticks of Thomas, Champagne and Kyle Baril to round out the scoring.

Dustin Hummel finished up with 35 saves to register the victory for the Trappers who raised their record to 5-9-0-3 overall.

Sylvain Morin started for the Eskimos and suffered the loss allowing four against on 32 attempts with Julien Deschenes making 17 stops in relief for Abitibi, who fell to 6-6-0-2 on the campaign.

NOJHL action resumes Wednesday as Abitibi continues their road travels as they take to the ice at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff to meet the Sudbury Nickel Barons at 7:30 p.m.
