NOJHL names  Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced that Kirkland Lake Gold Miners goaltender Victor-Olivier Courchesne, Soo Eagles forward Reed Gregory and Blind River Beavers netminder Matt Blattenberger have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week, for the period ending Dec. 6.

VICTOR-OLIVIER COURCHESNE, (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS In two starts last week the 18-year-old netminder, who hails from Quebec City, Que., won both of them as he backstopped the Gold Miners to a pair of victories.

Courchesne began by allowing just one goal against in a triumph over French River this past Friday.

One night later he kicked out all 25 shots he faced in posting his first NOJHL shutout, a 2-0 triumph over the visiting Soo Eagles.

The Kirkland Lake stopper finished the week with a stingy 0.50 average along with a solid .974 save percentage.

REED GREGORY, (F) SOO EAGLES – Facing a formidable task of playing four games in just five nights away from Pullar Stadium, the 20-year-old native of Franktown, Colo., paced the Eagles offensively last week by registering seven points on the road trip.

Gregory began the road swing by notching a career single game high four goals in a victory at Blind River on Dec. 2.

He then finished up by scoring once and setting up two others, including assisting on the game-winner, as the Eagles soared past Timmins on Sunday afternoon.

Having joined the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., side in late October Gregory is averaging a point-per-game with eight tallies and two helpers in his first 10 contests with the club.

MATT BLATTENBERGER, (G) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – In his first five appearances since joining Blind River, Blattenberger has been tested steadily as he has faced 238 shots in just 240 minutes played.

Seeing an average of 47.6 shots against per start the 19-year-old product of Lake View, N.Y., saw 151 alone come his way last week as he has been peppered early and often in his tenure with the Beavers.

Blattenberger certainly rose to the challenge last Saturday as he stoned the powerful Soo Thunderbirds by stopping all 64 shots fired his way as Blind River upset the defending NOJHL and Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion T-Birds 1-0.
