Abitibi tops Mattawa 6-2

MATTAWA – The Abitibi Eskimos capped off a two-game road trip with a second consecutive victory by defeating the Mattawa Blackhawks 6-2 Saturday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at Mike Rodden Arena.

The two teams traded power play tallies in the opening 20 minutes with Ryan Tront connecting for Abitibi and Alex Dajia countering for Mattawa.

In the middle session the Eskimos tacked on two more markers to go up a pair entering the third.

After Kyle Levis struck shorthanded at 13:16, Cameron Etherington added one at even strength with 83 seconds remaining in the stanza.

Abitibi added to their lead in the first minute of the final frame thanks to Tristan Salesse, who notched his first goal in an Abitibi uniform.

Levis then picked up his second of the night to make it 5-1 before Marco Luciani added one for the Blackhawks at 13:45.

The visitors then rounded out the scoring with a Blake Cudmore man advantage effort with 33 seconds remaining.

Shots on goal favoured Mattawa 37-34 with Chet Tooker picking up the win and Joe Sheppard the loss.
