SUDBURY, Ont. – A Pierson Sobush power play marker late in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Greater Sudbury Cubs skated to a narrow 2-1 triumph over the Blind River Beavers in a tightly contested Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair Thursday at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Sobush would also open thee scoring for the Cubs as he connected at 12:46 into the match-up as he slammed in a rebound off a Christopher Innes from the slot that beat Blind River starter Gavin Disano.
Entering the night having won each of their past dozen outings, the Beavers drew level four and a half minutes into the middle stanza thanks to Owen Arnold, who powered his way along the left side boards before cutting around a defender and roofing one, short side, on Greater Sudbury netminder Noah Metivier.
However, Sobush converted once more with his second of the night and 39th overall to collect the decider with 51 seconds remaining in the frame.
On the play, he went to the net on the left side and finished off some crisp passing from teammates Samuel Assinewai and Oliver Smith where he quickly whipped it in.
It remained a tightly played game the rest of the way as there was no further scoring, with Metivier’s efforts helping the Cubs improve to 41-10-2-0 on the season.
Disano was equally solid in defeat where Blind River’s lengthy winning streak came to a close as they fell to 37-11-2-2 overall.
