Elliot Lake edges Blind River 4-3

ELLIOT LAKE – Cory Simic turned in a 53-save performance to help backstop the Elliot Lake Bobcats to a 4-3 victory over the Blind River Beavers Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena.

With the win the Bobcats improve to 14-29-0-2 on the season and 30 points, just one behind the fifth place Beavers who slipped to 12-25-2-5 overall.

Tyson MacLeod staked Blind River to the lead with the only goal of the opening period coming at 7:18 as he scored during a man advantage opportunity.

Brandon Bazinet put the visitors up 2-0 early the second only to see Elliot Lake strike back with a trio of tallies before the intermission to make it 3-2 Bobcats after 40 minutes.

Notching those markers were Brian Hennessy, Steve Gaul and Henry Berger with Hennessy earning assists on the last two goals as well.

Coty Thomas made it 4-2 Elliot Lake with 15:06 to go before Corey McEwen brought the Beavers to within one with 12 minutes to go buring his 20th goal of the campaign.

Simic however shut the door the rest of the way with the contest ending up in favour of the Bobcats.

Brock Crossthwaite was also solid in the Blind River net finishing up with 47 stops in a losing cause. He also picked up an assist on the last Beavers’ offensive effort.

The two sides will meet once again Saturday the venue switching to the Blind River Community Centre in one of two NOJHL games on the docket.

Jus Jordan Arena in Iroquois Falls will be the sight of the other contest as the Abitibi Eskimos host the North Bay Trappers in the first of a home-and-home set between those sides.
