Janke strikes early in OT as Trappers take series lead on Gold Miners

KIRKLAND LAKE – A Brandon Janke goal 32 seconds into overtime lifted the North Bay Trappers to a 3-2 victory over the host Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Friday in game 3 of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League semifinal series in front of a large crowd at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

With the win the Trappers now lead the best-of-seven affair 2-1 heading into game 4 Saturday back in Kirkland Lake at 7:30 p.m.

Game 5 goes Monday back in North Bay at 7 p.m.

It was the home side who opened the scoring in this one as Daniel Morin beat North Bay netminder Greg Dodds four minutes into the contest.

Trevor Hunt levelled the proceedings late in the stanza as he connected on the power play at 18:25.

The Trappers took the lead 3:08 into the middle frame as Brennen Dubchak finished off a feed by Hunt only to see Tanner Lafrance tie it for the Gold Miners six minutes later to tie it at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Following a scoreless third period North Bay ended it early in OT as a sprawling Dubchak who shovelled the puck in front to Janke who calmly backhanded the winner along the ice into the open right side of the net past Kirkland Lake goalkeeper Chris Komma.

Each game in the series to date has been decided by one goal, including two that required extra time to determine a victor.

Dodds finished with 30 stops to pick up the win while Komma faced 21 shots in a losing cause for the Gold Miners.

The winner of the series will meet the Soo Thunderbirds in the league final to vie for the NOJHL championship.
