NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that forward Nolan Newton (Greater Sudbury Cubs); defencemen Owen Cassidy (Iroquois Falls Storm) and goaltender Braydon Garnhart (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending September 17.

NOLAN NEWTON, (F) GREATER SUDBURY CUBS – Newton’s six-point week in regulation time, along with a difference maker in a shootout, aided in Greater Sudbury’s pair of positive results during the time frame.

The 17-year-old from French River, Ont., started with a goal and three assists, including one on the eventual winner, in the Cubs victory over the Soo Eagles Thursday.

Next came two more helpers, along with the shootout winner Saturday, at Powassan. His 10 total points through three games sees him tied for the NOJHL scoring lead.

OWEN CASSIDY, (D) IROQUOIS FALLS STORM – The 16-year-old blueliner from Madoc, Ont., played a pivotal role in helping the unbeaten Storm maintain their solid start.

Cassidy began his week by notching the tying tally in the third period against the Thunderbirds Friday, then set-up the game-winner in overtime.

Adding to that Saturday, he scored twice, featuring the deciding marker in extra time, sending Iroquois Falls off to a 3-0 start in their return to the NOJHL with a victory over Elliot Lake.

BRAYDEN GARNHART (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Getting the starting nod for Kirkland Lake in back-to-back affairs, Garnhart backstopped his club to victories in both of them.

The 19-year-old from Roscoe, Illinois began with a home ice triumph over the Soo Thunderbirds Saturday, then followed that up hours later with a Sunday afternoon decision against the Elliot Lake Vikings.

Garnhart is well on his way early to surpassing the five wins he had with the Gold Miners last season, on a campaign where he was second in saves by rookie goaltenders, and fifth overall, with 1,109.
