Powassan rallies to top Mattawa

MATTAWA – Jacob Erwin tallied twice, including the game-winner, as the Powassan Voodoos bounced back from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the Mattawa Blackhawks 5-3 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee Sunday at Mike Rodden Arena.

Special teams allowed Mattawa to go up a pair in the opening 10 minutes of the contest as Andy Williams struck shorthanded at 4:39 followed by a Tristan Nugent man advantage effort three minutes later.

Powassan pulled even before the first period was complete however as they notched tallies 28 seconds apart by Erwin and Michael Silveri.

The Voodoos then took the lead for good in the latter stages of the middle stanza when Brendan D’Agostino scored while his side was down a man at 17:16.

After Erwin made it 4-2 six and a half minutes into the final frame, Marco Luciani connected on the power play for the Blackhawks with 1:52 to go make it interesting.

In the end though Steve Harland added an insurance marker in an empty net with 17 seconds to go to round out the scoring having already extended a consecutive game assist and point streak to five with an earlier helper.

Harland also scored for a fifth straight outing as the Voodoos rookie forward has seven tallies and five assists during his trio of active streaks.

Nicolas Proulx also set-up two goals for Powassan on the afternoon to aid the winners cause.

Shots on net favoured the Voodoos 46-33 with Jack Ondrovic picking up the victory and Joe Sheppard the defeat.
