Soo Thunderbirds sail past French River
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Mark Tassone notched a hat trick, Greg Smith doled out four assists and Dougie Newhouse posted the shutout as the Soo Thunderbirds sailed past the French River Rapids 8-0 Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.
Tassone sent Sault Ste. Marie on their way with his first of the day, via the power play, two and a half minutes into the contest.
Gage Stephney made it 2-0 at 8:04 while Tassone added another later in the frame to put the home side up by three after one period of play.
A trio of second stanza markers made it 6-0 Thunderbirds as Austin Kozluk, Ryan Mulligan during a man advantage and Tassone all found the back of the net.
Zach Senecal’s team-leading 27th upped the Soo lead three minutes into the third while his club was shorthanded before Keenan Eddy’s 11th rounded out the scoring at 4:56.
Newhouse made 12 saves to record his second shutout of the season for the Soo.
Evan Peltier started for French River and suffered the loss allowing six against on 33 attempts while Simon Wood stopped eight of 10 in third period relief.
