T-Birds Haines commits to Laurentian

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced today that overage forward Darcy Haines has committed to attend Laurentian University in Sudbury and play for the Voyaguers hockey team, who compete out of Ontario University Athletics.

The Val Caron, Ont., product, who came over in a trade from the Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL) in November of last season, scored 21 goals and added 44 assists for 65 points in 33 regular season games with the T-Birds.

He also the NOJHL in postseason scoring with 18 points in 14 playoff outings.

Haines, the NOJHL’s most valuable player in 2012-13, was named the league’s Gongshow Gear player of the month in December and was selected as one of the NOJHL’s Three Stars Of The Week five times throughout the 2013-14 campaign.

“Darcy had hoped to play at Laurentian, so I’m real happy for him,” said Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain.

“CIS hockey is a very high level of hockey with many former NOJHL players,” added the Soo GM.

“Darcy has very good offensive instincts and will turn into a valuable scorer over his years there,”offered Cain. “He is a very intense playerand a real good teammate. We wish Darcy the best of luck and thank him for all he did for the Soo Thunderbirds in his time here.”
