Thunderbirds run win streak to a dozen

BLIND RIVER – The Soo Thunderbirds jumped out an early lead and never looked back as they skated to their 12th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Saturday, a 7-2 triumph over the Blind River Beavers, at the Blind River Community Centre.

Nicolas Tassone, Nathan Hebert and Jaren Bellini put Sault Ste. Marie up by three early in the contest.

After Jared Binguis got Blind River on the board with a power play marker at 16:33, the Thunderbirds’ Nicolas Sicoly answered right back just 22 seconds later to go up 4-1.

The goals kept coming in the late stages of the opening 20 minutes with Chris Zajac adding one for the home side at 17:39 followed by one from the T-Birds’ Hebert during a man advantage with 11 seconds left in the session.

After a scoreless middle stanza the Thunderbirds put it away in the third on tallies by Travis Campbell and Bellini to round out the scoring.

Joey Miller and Matt Pinder each chipped in with two assists to aid the Sault’s offensive cause.

Shots on goal favoured the winners 36-30 with Brian Kment picking up the win and Nick Kazmierczak the loss.
