Thunderbirds take 1st of 2 vs. rival Eagles
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A pair of Avery Rebek third period goals helped the Soo Thunderbirds rally for a 4-3 victory over the rival Soo Eagles Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition contest at Pullar Stadium in front over 500 fans.
The Eagles used the strength of two first period power play markers to go up by a pair after 20 minutes thanks to tallies from Chris Banser and Mikey Butcher.
The Thunderbirds got one back with a man advantage effort of their own 6:38 into the middle stanza compliments of Alexi Acosta.
A third power play goal on the night, off the stick of Mihali See, midway through the contest put the Eagles back up by two.
The T-Birds countered that thanks to Brendan Miller at 15:40 with Ryan Mulligan picking up his first of two assists on the night.
Rebek then tied it for the Thunderbirds early in the third then notched the game-winner at 7:17 to secure the come from behind triumph.
Brandon Gordon was busy in the T-Birds net making 45 saves on the night to post the win, including 22 alone in the opening frame.
Shane Brancato faced 24 shots in defeat for the Eagles.
The same two sides meet again Saturday in a 7 p.m. start back at Pullar Stadium.
