Timmins tops Kirkland Lake 5-3
TIMMINS, Ont. – Two goals late in the first period and another early in the second helped send the Timmins Rock on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Wednesday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at McIntyre Arena.
The visiting Gold Miners did open the scoring at 17:49 of the first courtesy of defenceman Adam Desgagnes initial NOJHL tally.
Timmins came right back with the equalizer however just 37 seconds later thanks to Tyler Levis and then took the lead in the final moments of the session when Jordan Rendle buried his 19th of the season at 19:55.
The Rock’s Zachary Kercz picked up a point in his fifth straight game in December as he notched his 17th goal overall before the middle session was two minutes old.
Kirkland Lake got that back via the power play thanks to an Alexander Hester effort at 16:04.
Timmins first-year forward Bain Cunningham restored the home side’s two-tally cushion eight and a half minutes into the third as he scored for the 16th time in 2015-16.
The back-and-forth affair saw Brett Ouderkirk bring the Gold Miners to within one with 8:27 left in regulation, but Aaron Kerr iced it for the Rock with a man advantage effort at 15:42 to round out the night’s scoring.
Logan Ferrington made 24 saves in the Timmins’ net to register the victory.
Victor-Olivier Courchesne faced 32 attempts in defeat for Kirkland Lake.
