Eagles break loose late to dispatch Eskis

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles broke open a tie game with four third period goals to help them skate to a 6-3 victory over the Iroquois Falls Eskis Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Pullar Stadium.

The game was scoreless deep into the final moments of the opening stanza when Chris Murphy collected his fourth of the season for the Eagles with only seven seconds remaining in the stanza.

Iroquois Falls countered with markers less than a minute apart in the second as Dillan Bruce and Blake Holowaty scored for the Eskis.

The power play allowed Sault Ste. Marie to knot the affair at 2-2 with 7:52 left in the frame thanks to Brendan Schultz.

The Eagles came out flying to begin the third as Chris Lutz and Landon Hubbard both found the back of the net before the period was two minutes old to make it 4-2 for the home side.

A Schultz man advantage effort midway through the third added to the Soo lead.

The two teams then traded markers in the late going to round out the scoring with Ryan Forsyth connecting for Iroquois Falls and Jake Saxton, into an empty net, countered for the Eagles.

Bradley Hofelich and Carmen Scarfone supplied two assists each for the Soo in the win.

The Eagles outshot the Eskis 49-32 on the night with Jack Deines picking up the victory and Trevor Hawkes the loss.
