Trappers rally to upend Nickel Barons in double OT

NORTH BAY – A Jake Ibbitson goal 1:23 into the second overtime propelled the North Bay Trappers to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Sudbury Nickel Barons Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at West Ferris Arena.

It was Josh Moore who put Sudbury on the board first via the power play at 13:40 of the opening stanza as the Nickel Barons forward connected for a third consecutive game.

North Bay answered right back however as Eric Champagne leveled the proceedings a minute later.

Sudbury then struck in the latter stages of the middle frame when Jimmy Roy added a man advantage marker with 22 seconds left in the session.

The Trappers’ Duane Wainman then forced OT with 3:18 remaining in regulation and he picked up a point in his fourth straight game since being acquired in a deal from Espanola.

Following a scoreless five-minute first extra period Ibbitson won depositing the game-winner  past Sudbury starter Michael Muzyka to end it as the two sides played three skaters aside.

Evan Cormier made 31 saves to pick-up the win for North Bay, who improved to 12-16-0-5.

Sudbury salvaged a point in defeat with Muzyka facing 35 attempts as the Nickel Barons slipped to 8-19-0-5.

They will now return home to host the Elliot Lake Bobcats Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena.
