6 points for Hazlett as Gold Miners blast Blackhawks

KIRKLAND LAKE – Tristen Hazlett scored five times and set-up another to help the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners blast the Mattawa Blackhawks 13-4 in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Saturday at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake grabbed a three-goal lead early in the first on markers by Luc Soares, Hazlett and Tyler Romain.

After Mattawa’s Christian Sgroi connected on the power play at 15:28, Joel Fortin answered right back for the Gold Miners 37 seconds later to make it 4-1 after 20 minutes.

Hazlett picked up his second of the evening early in the middle frame before Alex Hulford added one for the Blackhawks at 6:20.

Kirkland Lake was once again quick to respond as Fortin picked up another a minute and half after Hulford’s effort.

Jeremy Dumont then made it 7-2 midway through the contest before Andy Williams added a man one for Mattawa during a man advantage at 12:27.

The Gold Miners then blew the game open in the third getting three more tallies from Hazlett along with singles from Ethan Strong, Steven Babin and Soares.

Josh Cameron added one late for the Blackhawks to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal favoured Kirkland Lake 31-17 with Kenny Fitzgerald picking up the win and Josh Horner the loss.
