Battalion forwards bolster Voodoos lineup for season opener
POWASSAN, Ont. — The Powassan Voodoos will have a pair of 2014 draft picks joining them on the road for their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League franchise opener Friday night in Cochrane.
Battalion draft picks Steven Harland and Brendan D’Agostino join the Voodoos corps of forwards which includes 3 of the top 5 scorers in the Great North Midget League last season in locals Nathan McLeod, Sudbury Wolves prospect Michael Silveri and Aaron Dart.
In Harland, the Voodoos acquire one of the top major midget prospects in the province.
The Scarborough native was taken in the 6th round by the Battalion after an impressive season with the Toronto Young Nationals, who finished 4th in the Telus Cup this spring.
Harland finished second in team scoring with 17 goals and 18 assists during their 23-5-5 regular season record in the GTHL. He followed that up with 15 goals and 12 assists in the playoffs, leading the Nats to the GTHL 2014 Kraft Cup title.
In D’Agostino, the Voodoos get another skilled forward and a player who has North Bay roots. He was born in North Bay and is the nephew of well-known North Bay lawyer John D’Agostino.
The skilled forward taken in the 14th round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection by the Battalion, netted 16 goals along with 25 assist for 41 points in 40 games with the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs Minor Midget AAA squad in 2013-14.
“We are thrilled to have these two additions to our lineup,” said Voodoos GM Chris Dawson.
“Traditionally it has been rare to get Toronto players excited to play up here in the north but these two players are changing that trend. In Harland we get a late bloomer that played double A hockey until last year when he exploded onto the AAA GTHL scene.”
The Voodoos also continued to sign local talent adding North Bay Midget AAA Trappers goalie Benoit Auger, who was an invite to the Battalion Spring Prospects Camp.
The Voodoos also signed trio of High School hockey players in Cory Tremblay and Traven Reed from the Algonquin Barons along with Bo Peltier from the Widdifield Wildcats.
The Voodoos head to Cochrane to visit the Crunch on Friday night and then travel down highway 11 to visit the Abitibi Eskimos on Saturday night in Iroquois Falls.
