OLIVER-PAIPOONGE, Ont. – The Soo Eagles stormed back from a two-goal third period deficit to defeat the Kam River Fighting Walleye (SIJHL) 3-2 Friday night in a Canadian Junior Hockey League exhibition affair at NorWest Arena, just outside of Thunder Bay.
A late man advantage effort 7:47 into the contest saw Kam River open the scoring courtesy of Trenton Morriseau in the CJHL inter-league match-up.
Second period action saw the Eagles hold a 17-12 edge in shots on goal, but neither club saw was able to convert offensively.
The Walleye did add to their lead four minutes into the third as they connected on the power play once more, with Braeden Duchesne putting one past Sault Ste. Marie netminder Logan Raffaele.
Finding their skating legs after a long travel day, Jack Paweski put the Eagles on the board midway through the final session when he clicked with his side up a skater.
Not done there, the Soo drew level a couple of shifts later thanks to veteran forward Chase Tallaire.
They then completed the comeback with 90 seconds left on a marker credited to Jack Mortson as he beat Walleye goalkeeper Jack Orchard for the game-winner.
The two sides meet again Saturday in a 7 p.m. start back at NorWest Arena.
