Elliot Lake power play the difference in decision over Rayside-Balfour
ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats scored four times on the power play to help lead them to an impressive 6-1 victory over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Friday at Centennial Arena.
Special teams allowed Elliot Lake to get on the board early in the contest when Shane Woolsey notched his fourth goal of the season at 3:22 during a man advantage opportunity.
The Wildcats power play struck again five and a half minutes later as Riley William picked up his first NOJHL marker to put the home side up by two through one period of play.
It was more Elliot Lake to begin the second stanza as they increased their lead to 3-0 as Brett Crook collected his initial league tally just 96 seconds into session.
The Wildcats kept coming and added another midway through stanza compliments of Woolsey’s second man advantage effort of the evening.
After picking up assists on his club’s first two tallies of the night, Quinn Robelle added a third point as he connected on a power play chance with 59 seconds left in the period.
Elliot Lake’s offensive onslaught continued with five and a half minutes to as Tyler Akeeagok notched his first NOJHL goal to extend the cushion.
The Canadians did put an end to Matt Kostiw’s shutout bid in the Wildcats net in the late going when Bradey Johnson snapped home his fourth of the season from the slot at 18:26 to round out the scoring.
Kostiw finished with 25 saves in picking up the win while Owen Johansson faced 34 shots in a losing cause for the Canadians.
