MASSEY, Ont. – Backed by a two-goal night from Bronson Babyak, the Hearst Lumberjacks went on to down the Elliot Lake Vikings 4-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Massey & District Community Arena.
A nice tip in by Dylan Hendrick, off an Allan Watt shot from the left point, did give Elliot Lake the lead 11:18 into the contest, in eluding Lumberjacks’ starter Owen Bonthuis.
Hearst countered quickly however to knot the affair at 1-1 after one when Adam Shillinglaw pumped in a blast from the top of the right circle off a faceoff win by Mathieu Comeau.
A couple of Lumberjacks markers in the back half of the second period gave them a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Going in front, Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne snagged a loose puck that Vikings’ netminder Brogan Colquhoun could not contain, which allowed him to slide in a backhand.
Then Hugo Allard forced a turnover down low and worked it to Babyak, who quickly ripped it in.
In the final frame, Babyak iced it in the final seconds with an empty netter to wrap things up.
The result raises Hearst’s record to 12-4-0-0, while in defeat, Elliot Lake dropped to 4-10-0-0.
