Strong 3rd sends Voodoos past Crunch for 19th win in a row

COCHRANE, Ont. – Ryan Theriault broke a 2-2 tie with 8:09 to go for the game-winner as the red-hot Powassan Voodoos won their 19th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest in a row Saturday earning a 4-2 decision over the Cochrane Crunch at Tim Horton Event Centre.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Kyle Herbster put the Curnch in front 1-0 with his seventh of the season 1:21 into the middle session.

Down a man, Powassan tied it just over three and a half minutes later as Gary Mantz struck shorthanded to knot the affair at 1-1 after two periods of play.

A Voodoos power play allowed the visitors to go up by one as Andy Baker collected his NOJHL-leading 27th tally of the campaign at 4:11 of the third.

Picking up an assist on that marker was Tyson Gilmour, which helped the rookie forward extend a point streak to nine in succession.

Cochrane countered with the equalizer off the stick of Brandon McReynolds at 11:36, but Theriault came right back with the eventual difference maker just 15 seconds later.

The Crunch pulled goaltender Leighton Williams late in an effort to tie it, but Tyler Gervais-Rolfe iced it with an empty netter with a minute to go to secure the win.

Nate McDonald made 39 saves to register the victory for Powassan while Williams faced 42 shots in defeat for Cochrane.
