Thunderbirds defeat Bobcats 6-4

ELLIOT LAKE – A Yan Kalashnikov goal with 9:14 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Thunderbirds defeated the Elliot Lake Bobcats 6-4 Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Centennial Arena.

An offensively charged opening period saw the Thunderbirds take a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes.

Scoring for the T-Birds in the session were Gavin Burbach, Anthony Miller and Brandon Warmington while Brian Henessey tallied twice for the Bobcats.

Sault Ste. Marie took a two-goal lead after the middle stanza courtesy of a Darcy Casola man advantage marker at 4:01.

Elliot Lake stormed back in the third to tie it on efforts supplied by captain Kyle Rowe and Jake Suvak who notched his first goal of the season, at 9:02.

The tie was short lived however with Kalashnikov connecting a minute and 44 seconds after Suvak’s equalizer.

Tyler Jones wrapped things up in the final minute for the visitors, scoring into the empty net for the.

Steve Dombrowski made 45 saves to record the victory for the Thunderbirds coming off injury, making his first appearance since Nov. 17, while winning his eighth consecutive start in the process and helping his club improve to 26-8-3-3 overall.

Cory Simic faced 33 shots in a losing cause as the Bobcats slipped to 10-25-0-2 on the campaign.

NOJHL action resumes Wednesday as Elliot Lake travels to Sudbury to take on the Nickel Barons at 7:30 p.m.
