TIMMINS, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Timmins Rock skated to their 40th win of the season Sunday afternoon in defeating the Powassan Voodoos 7-4 at McIntyre Arena.
An early power play helped Timmins get off to a quick start and saw Nicolas Pigeon put a play to the net that hit off the leg of teammate Nicholas Frederick and bounce into the net at 1:34.
The helper for Pigeon helped him run a consecutive game point streak to an impressive 15 games.
Going to the man advantage once more, the Rock’s Brady Harroun buried his league-leading 41st marker of the campaign three minutes later as he blasted a one-timer from the right circle that flew past Powassan netminder Daniel Dirracolo, off a pass from Kenyon Nyman.
Blowing it open in the second stanza, Timmins went ahead 6-0 before the frame was eight minutes old.
Ethan Pool began the offensive outburst by flying down the left wing and lifting a rising backhand by Dirracolo at 1:23.
They then saw Harroun connect again as he tipped in a Nyman attempt from the right side.
The Rock then put an early end to Dirracolo’s afternoon when Kaeden McArthur was left free near the crease to stuff in his 10th of the campaign.
Despite Kannon Flageolle coming in for the Voodoos, the home scored less than a minute later as Lucas Piekarczyk finished a quick give-and-go with Pigeon.
Settling down slightly, Powassan got one back at 11:27 thanks to Caden Dubreuil’s first NOJHL goal as his impressive dash into the Timmins zone saw him blow past a defender and fire one upstairs on Patrick Boivin in the Rock net.
Going to the power play, the visitors added another before the intermission with defenceman Nicholas Liotino wheeling out from behind the goal line and sending a shot through Boivin.
Moving to the final frame, the guests added another near the half-way mark as Ryan Patrick stood unmarked to stuff the puck in from close range.
A fourth straight Voodoos tally made it 6-4 with 3:11 remaining when Alex Little was credited for the marker as his attempt in front hit off a Rock player and slid across the goal line.
The guests then removed their netminder for an extra attacker in the late going, but saw Timmins ice it with an empty netter off the stick of Nolan Ring to cap off the result as he broke through the a couple of Powassan players and notched his 18th of the season to wrap things up.
With the decision, the Rock move to 40-7-3-2 while the Voodoos fall to 34-15-1-0.
