Timmins tops Kirkland Lake in preseason play

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Timmins Rocks used a well-balanced attack getting goals from seven different skaters to defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 7-5 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Bain Cunningham staked the Rock to the lead 4:17 into the contest before the Gold Miners struck twice with late power player markers from William Mizuik and Marshall Nikitin to go up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Timmins roared back with three tallies in the middle session for a lead 4-2 on efforts supplied by Marcus Blackned, Brandon Major and Cole Gilligan.

Each side would score three times apiece in the third to wrap things up offensively.

Cory Sprague, Alex Brisson and Wayne Mathieu found the back of the net for the Rock in the stanza while Kevin Ford, Austin Ramirez and T.J. Oricchio countered for Kirkland Lake.

Caleb Barris started in net for the Rock while Bradley Dobson picked up the win in just under 30 minutes of relief allowing three against.

Victor-Olivier Courchesne played the first half of the match-up giving up two goals and Tanner Emerson allowing five in a losing cause after entering the game midway through the contest.

The same two teams will meet again Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start at McIntyre Arena in Timmins.
