Blind River swamps Kirkland Lake

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – The Blind River Beavers rode the strength of a four-goal first period to help propel them to a 7-3 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Blind River Community Centre.

Yianni Liarakos staked the Beavers to an early lead 1:48 into the contest as he extended an impressive consecutive game point streak to 13 in the process.

Mark Bastianello then made it 2-0 Blind River five and a half minutes later.

Kirkland Lake cut into the deficit at 8:25 on Kevin Ford’s 17th tally of the season.

However, the home side came back and tacked on two more before the frame was complete thanks to efforts courtesy of Anthony Pullicino and Zac Lambrecht with the latter earning a point in his eighth straight outing.

Blind River kept it going and made it 5-1 just 71 seconds into the middle stanza on Bastianello’s second of the game and 10th overall.

Liarakos then struck shorthanded for the Beavers at 14:23 as he raised his tally total on the season to 16.

Ford would pull the Gold Miners closer 7:15 into the third as he notched another with his 18th.

Bastianello then finished off a hat trick midway through the third on a power play goal before Kirkland Lake’s Austin Anselmo rounded out the scoring with eight minutes to go.

Myles Hektor made 34 saves to post the win for the Beavers while Victor-Olivier Courchesne faced 40 shots in defeat for the Gold Miners.
