NOJHL announces Gongshow Gear players of the month for February

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Friday its respective Gongshow Gear Inc., player, defenceman, goaltender and rookie of the month for February.

GONGSHOW GEAR PLAYER OF THE MONTH – ALEX STORJOHANN, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS: Taking to the ice eight times last month, the 20-year-old from Anthem, Ariz., amassed eight goals and a dozen assists for the Gold Miners.

His efforts also produced seven multi-point affairs and one game-winning goal.

Storjohann enters play this evening leading the Gold Miners and sitting sixth in NOJHL offensive production with 68 points in just 45 games on 20 tallies and 48 assists.

In his past 17 games, since the start of 2017, he’s only been held off the scoresheet four times aiding in his club’s resurgence while averaging two points-per-game in that span.

GONGSHOW GEAR DEFENCEMAN OF THE MONTH – DAYTON MURRAY, (D) POWASSAN VOODOOS: Murray, who turned 20 a month ago, earns his second league defenceman of the month honours for his efforts in February.

The Spruce Grove, Alta., product chipped in with four goals, including a game-winner and nine assists for 13 points helping Powassan go 7-1-0-0 in the month.

Murray is currently second in scoring among all NOJHL D-men with 46 points on 16 markers and 30 helpers.

He also tops all league blueliners in both power play goals and game-winning tallies with 11 and five respectively.

GONGSHOW GEAR GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH – DOUGIE NEWHOUSE, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS: February was a solid month for the first-year Thunderbirds netminder.

The 17-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., was a perfect 5-0 for surging Sault Ste. Marie registering a solid 1.40 goals-against average along with a stingy .943 save percentage while also posting one shutout.

On the season, Newhouse has won his last nine starts and 11 of his previous 12 for the Thunderbirds, raising his overall record to 14-1-1-0 in 17 appearances with a 2.29 average and .913 save mark.

His three shutouts on the year tie him for second in the NOJHL, trailing only teammate Brandon Gordon’s five.

GONGSHOW GEAR ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – DOUGIE NEWHOUSE (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS: Along with his five victories in as many starts last month, Newhouse has not suffered a loss since back on Nov. 11, which was a 3-2 overtime setback at Pullar Stadium vs. the cross-border rival Soo Eagles.

The rookie netminder is unbeaten on home ice in this his first season in the NOJHL with the T-Birds going 9-0 in 10 appearances at either Essar Centre or the John Rhodes Community Centre while posting two shutouts and recording a 2.21 goals-against average along with a save percentage of .905 in the Soo.
