TIMMINS, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds saw their starting goaltender Brandon Gordon shine as he stopped all 26 shots he faced to shutout the Timmins Rock 1-0 Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee match-up at McIntyre Arena.
It was a goaltender’s duel throughout with Gordon and Timmins netminder Eric Jackson standing tall between the pipes for their respective sides.
This tight-checking affair was scoreless through one period of play.
Action in the middle stanza saw Sault Ste. Marie secure the lone tally of the afternoon 7:25 into the frame when Nick Smith notched the game-winner for his first tally of the season off of assists from Noah Solinger and Ryan Mulligan.
The goalkeepers did the rest in this low-scoring affair as it went on to end 1-0 in favour of the visitors.
Jackson made 22 saves in the narrow defeat for the Rock.
