Wildcats tame Nickel Barons

ELLIOT LAKE – The surging Elliot Lake Wildcats capped off a second straight victory over the Sudbury Nickel Barons, skating to a 6-1 triumph Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Centennial Arena.

Special teams allowed the Wildcats to take the lead with the lone marker of the opening period as Cole Hepler connected on the power play at 8:05.

Elliot Lake added two more in the middle session thanks to Spencer MacLean and Nate Sepeda to up 3-0 after 40 minutes.

A pair of early efforts in the third put the home side well in front as MacLean and Hepler converted just over a minute and a half apart.

MacLean then capped off a three-goal night with nine minutes remaining before Sudbury dashed Allan Menary’s shutout bid with 1:49 remaining on a Christopher Rossi goal.

Adam Baxter and Nathan Campbell chipped in with two assists apiece while MacLean and Hepler also added helpers.

Menary did make 20 saves to pick the win while Kevin Labelle had 40 shots put his way in the loss.
